How does Waymont iCloud Backup work?
After registering a device with Waymont, users are asked to backup their device signing key in iCloud.
How it Works When a user enrolls in iCloud backup, two secure processes occur:
Encryption of signing key: The user's signing key is locally encrypted before storing it in iCloud. This way, even if the user's iCloud account is compromised their wallet is still protected. The encryption key is stored in iCloud Keychain Services, which is end-to-end encrypted and can only be accessed via a physical Apple device linked to a user's iCloud account.
Storage of encrypted signing key: An encrypted version of the user's signing key is then stored in a secure, hidden section of iCloud’s file system, built exclusively for app data.
Requirements to restore an iCloud Backup
To restore a wallet from iCloud backup, users must be logged into their iCloud account and have access to a physical Apple device linked to their iCloud account.
Access to your iCloud Account: Your encrypted backup is protected by your iCloud account details, two-factor authentication (2FA), and advanced encryption techniques.
Access to a physical Apple device linked to your iCloud account: Your encryption key is safeguarded within iCloud Keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted and can only be accessed via a physical Apple device linked to your iCloud account.
This encryption mechanic maximizes security while still supporting an intuitive and familiar backup experience. You can read more about the security and redundancies we’ve built behind Waymont here: https://www.waymont.co/security
