Social Recovery
A. Setting up Social Recovery
Invite your friends and family to be your “Trusted Guardians” via email in the Settings page.
Your invited parties will receive an email invitation to download the Waymont Mobile App.
Once the invited Guardians download the Waymont Mobile App, it creates a private key secured via the Secure Enclave of their mobile device. It also asks the invited Guardian to backup an encrypted version of their keys to iCloud.
Confirm and approve their enrollment as a Trusted Guardian.
In the event that your Trusted Guardian loses their Trusted Device, they will be able to restore their recovery signer via their encrypted Apple iCloud backup.
They will just need to download the Waymont Mobile App again on their Apple account.
B. Recovering from social recovery
We’ve introduced account recovery to eliminate single-points of failure. A user may recover the following assets via the following steps:
Download the Waymont Mobile app on your new device
Click the "Settings wheel" then navigate to the "Trusted Devices Tab." Select "Add/Reconnect device"
Using your Waymont Mobile app, scan the QR code on Waymont Mobile
Select "I have lost my Trusted Device," which triggers the Recovery process
Ask your guardians to open their Waymont Mobile App and approve the recovery request
If 51% of the guardians approve the request, the device that triggered the recovery is designated as the new signer following a 48-hour waiting period.
C. iCloud Recovery
After registering a device with Waymont, users are asked to backup their device signing key in iCloud.
How it Works
Encryption of signing key: The user's signing key is locally encrypted before storing it in iCloud. This way, even if the user's iCloud account is compromised their wallet is still protected. The encryption key used is stored in iCloud Keychain Services, which is end-to-end encrypted and can only be accessed via a physical Apple device linked to a user's iCloud account.
Storage of encrypted signing key: An encrypted version of the user's signing key is then stored in a secure, hidden section of iCloud’s file system, built exclusively for app data.
Requirements to restore an iCloud Backup
To restore a wallet from iCloud backup, users must be logged into their iCloud account and have access to a physical Apple device linked to their iCloud account.
Access to your iCloud Account: Your encrypted backup is protected by your iCloud account details, two-factor authentication (2FA), and advanced encryption techniques.
Access to a physical Apple device linked to your iCloud account: Your encryption key is safeguarded within iCloud Keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted and can only be accessed via a physical Apple device linked to your iCloud account.
This encryption mechanic maximizes security while still supporting an intuitive and familiar backup experience.
